bulbous airplant (Tillandsia bulbosa)
Tillandsia bulbosa is a small, stemless perennial epiphyte whose overlapping leaf bases form a flask-shaped to bulb-like pseudobulb. It is an evergreen perennial.

Overview
Tillandsia bulbosa is a small, stemless perennial epiphyte whose overlapping leaf bases form a flask-shaped to bulb-like pseudobulb. It is an evergreen perennial.
Origin and habitat
It is native to tropical America, with a broad range across Central America, the West Indies and Caribbean, southern Mexico, and northern and eastern South America, including Venezuela, Colombia, the Guianas, and parts of Brazil. Tillandsia species are generally epiphytic on surfaces such as tree trunks and rocks, and this species is also recorded from dry forest in Colombia across a range of elevations. It occurs in tropical environments and is particularly associated with humid tropical conditions.
Characteristics
Sources differ on mature height, with the limited information indicating about 7–32 cm. A single source reports a mature spread of about 10–50 cm. Tillandsia species are typically evergreen rosettes with leathery, linear to strap-shaped leaves whose surface scales can absorb water and nutrients. The flowers are reported to be stalkless, with blue to violet petals and stamens projecting beyond the petals; the inflorescence may be single or composed of a few finger-like spikes, and the bracts and parts of the inflorescence are often red, while sources differ on the reported size of the cylindrical capsule fruit.
Light
Provide bright indirect light or bright partial shade, avoiding strong direct sunlight.
Watering
Sources differ on watering frequency from spring through autumn, but describe soaking with rainwater, draining thoroughly, and allowing the plant to dry afterward; good ventilation and avoiding standing water around the base are important. The general method is to soak, then let dry, and a single source reports that the plant should dry promptly after watering.
Humidity and airflow
Tillandsia bulbosa needs good airflow.
Temperature and dormancy
A single source reports a warm-climate RHS hardiness classification. It is generally considered frost tender and should be kept above freezing.
Growing medium and mounting
It does not require ordinary potting soil and can be attached or tied to a support; its medium and surroundings should not retain standing water for long periods. It is suited to being mounted.
Feeding
It is generally reported to need little or no feeding.
Propagation
It can be propagated from seed or by separating offsets; guidance recommends waiting until offsets have reached a substantial fraction of the mother plant's size before separation.
Common problems
Possible pests include aphids, mealybugs, scale insects, and spider mites. Sources differ on disease concerns: disease is generally uncommon, while information for Tillandsia also records the possibility of sooty mold. A single source reports that prolonged water accumulation around the base or between leaves can cause rot or crown rot, so water should drain thoroughly after watering and airflow should be maintained. A protected position is preferred, with shade from strong summer light; this group is described as having moderate to relatively weak cold tolerance and strong heat tolerance.
Identification
It is reported to be distinguished by abruptly swollen, overlapping leaf-sheath bases that form a conspicuous pseudobulb, together with narrow, elongated leaf blades that curl inward strongly, bend, and twist; when flowering, the upper bracts often turn red alongside blue to violet petals.
