Emerald-Ripple Peperomia (Peperomia caperata)
Peperomia caperata is an evergreen perennial herb with a low, mounded to clumping habit; in tropical environments it may also grow as ground cover or in an epiphytic form.

Overview
Peperomia caperata is an evergreen perennial herb with a low, mounded to clumping habit; in tropical environments it may also grow as ground cover or in an epiphytic form.
Origin and habitat
Peperomia caperata is native to Brazil, while some sources describe its native range more broadly as South America or Central and South America. In its natural environment it can grow in forest understories and may occur in an epiphytic form in South American jungles. It is associated with tropical environments and is sensitive to cold and frost; in most temperate regions it is usually grown indoors.
Characteristics
Sources differ on mature height, placing it at about 10–50 cm, while mature spread is 20 cm. Growth is reported to be moderate. The leaves are thick to fleshy, usually dark green and heart-shaped with pronounced wrinkles or deep grooves, while cultivated varieties within the species vary considerably in leaf color; 'Rosso' has narrower, pointed leaves with dark green upper surfaces and red undersides. The very small greenish-white, creamy-white to white flowers are densely borne on slender, upright spikes that may appear tail-like or club-shaped, with flowering reported from spring through autumn and more narrowly as summer by some sources.
Light
Sources differ in their descriptions of light needs: bright indirect to moderate light is preferred, and the plant can tolerate low light for short periods; strong direct light during active growth may fade the leaves and weaken the plant, while light can be increased in winter.
Watering
Water moderately to sparingly, allowing the surface of the growing medium or potting mix to dry somewhat between waterings; use moderate watering in summer and less in winter, while avoiding persistently wet or waterlogged conditions and complete drying to reduce the risk of root rot.
Humidity and airflow
Peperomia caperata prefers high humidity.
Temperature and dormancy
A single source reports a minimum of about 15 °C and an ideal range of about 16–24 °C, so sources are few for these temperature figures. It is generally described as frost tender; keep above freezing.
Growing medium and mounting
Use a loose, porous, well-drained medium that may contain humus, organic matter, gravelly material, and peat; sources also describe loamy or sandy soil across acidic, neutral, or alkaline conditions, provided it is moist but well drained.
Feeding
A balanced liquid fertilizer is reported to be suitable for regular feeding from spring through summer.
Propagation
Propagation can be by petiole, leaf, or shoot-tip cuttings; leaf and shoot-tip cuttings are suited to spring, while leaf or petiole cuttings are also described for spring and summer, and seed may be sown when mature.
Common problems
Sources differ on pests: whiteflies, mealybugs, and spider mites may occur, while another source describes the plant as generally having few pest problems. Root rot, leaf spot, and gray mold may occur, and persistently wet growing medium is one of the main cultivation problems associated with root rot. Excessively dry conditions, strong direct light, and sites exposed to strong air currents are also unsuitable. The plant is sensitive to low temperatures and frost; colder conditions may be unsuitable for ordinary cultivation or cause cold injury, and freezing should be avoided.
Identification
'Rosso' is reported to be distinguished mainly by its narrow, pointed dark green leaves with vivid red undersides, while Peperomia caperata itself has conspicuously wrinkled, deeply grooved leaf surfaces and spike-like inflorescences.
