Overview
Sources differ in describing Hoya carnosa as an evergreen, trailing to climbing perennial that can twine, climb, or hang and is suitable for hanging containers. It is a perennial.
Origin and habitat
Sources differ on its native range, placing it across eastern and Southeast Asia, including India, southern China, Japan, and Taiwan, while some extend the range to Australia, Fiji, and other western Pacific areas. It can grow on trees, forest rocks, limestone ground, and coastal rocky sites, with epiphytic and climbing growth habits. It prefers warm, humid conditions and is also treated horticulturally as a subtropical plant.
Characteristics
Few sources report a mature height of about 400–800 cm and a mature spread of about 100–150 cm. It is reported to have vigorous growth. Sources differ in describing the opposite, thick, fleshy, waxy-glossed leaves, which in the typical form range from broadly ovate or elliptic to nearly heart-shaped. Sources differ in describing the flowers as waxy, star-shaped, white to pale pink with often red or deep-pink centers, densely clustered in umbel-like inflorescences, strongly sweet-scented especially at night, and able to secrete sweet, sticky nectar; flowering is mainly from spring through summer, with some accounts extending it to late summer, while the fruits are slender, spindle-shaped follicles.
Light
Sources differ on acceptable direct sun exposure, recommending bright indirect or filtered strong light, while some recommend partial sun.
Watering
Use a well-drained medium, allow it to dry somewhat after watering before watering again, avoid keeping it persistently wet, and allow it to become nearly dry during a resting period.
Humidity and airflow
Hoya carnosa prefers high humidity.
Temperature and dormancy
Few sources report a minimum temperature of about 5 °C. It is generally reported within a USDA hardiness-zone range. It is frost tender; keep above freezing.
Growing medium and mounting
Use a loose, fast-draining potting medium rich in organic matter; it can also adapt to well-drained loamy, sandy, or calcareous soils across acidic, neutral, and alkaline conditions.
Feeding
Fertilizer can be applied periodically during the growing season, with sources giving differing schedules for spring and summer applications or slow-release feeding.
Propagation
It can be propagated by stem cuttings, semi-hardwood cuttings, or layering; sources recommend particular cutting lengths and propagation periods but differ in their seasonal timing.
Common problems
Possible pests include mealybugs, indoor fungus gnats, and thrips. It is generally reported to have relatively few disease problems. Either overly wet or overly dry medium can cause leaf drop, while poor drainage and excessive moisture can increase the risk of rot; some sources also report yellowing leaves under intense sun exposure. It is sensitive to frost and freezing, and outdoor cultivation should use a sheltered, frost-free location.
Identification
Hoya carnosa has fleshy, glossy-waxy leaves and clusters of waxy, star-shaped, fragrant flowers; its stems can twine and climb or trail downward, and its flower stalks can bloom repeatedly over multiple years.
